The International School of the Gothenburg Region, ISGR, started in August 1997. The school is owned by the Göteborg Region Association of Local Authorities (GR), which comprises 13 municipalities in the region. Currently, ISGR has about 550 students enrolled. Teachers come from Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Japan, Lebanon, Iran, France, Australia, El Salvador, Belgium, Sweden, the UK and the USA.

Through an international and language-oriented approach, the school endeavours to give students an advantage in an international and multicultural society. Being able to speak several languages and feeling at ease in the culture and traditions of other countries is important in a society which is based increasingly on growing global co-operation. ISGR has some 61 nationalities represented throughout the school.

International School of the Gothenburg Region offers education for students who are between 6-16 years of age. The International section is authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate Organisation's Middle Years Programme for students in years 6-10, and authorization is being sought to offer the Primary Years Programme (PYP) for students in years 0-5. All the teaching in this section is done in English, except for foreign languages.

In the Swedish/English section, the school follows the Swedish National curriculum, LPO-94, for students in years 0-9. The contents of courses and the assessments are the same as in other Swedish schools. The language of instruction is both Swedish and English. After completing middle school, year 9, approximately half the education, except for the Swedish language and foreign languages studied, will have been taught in English.
