Kvarngärdesskolan International Classes
Kvarngärdet School is a municipal school that has an international section, founded in 1993, where all tuition is in English. The international classes at Kvarngärdet School are for children between the ages of 6 and 16 who meet the following criteria: 1. Children of guest researchers and guest workers in Sweden. 2. Children who have English as their mother tongue. 3. Swedish or foreign children who have a good command of English. The Junior School caters for children aged 6 to 8 years old, and there are classes for grades 2 - 9. Qualified native English-speaking teachers are responsible for the education programme, which follows the Swedish curriculum and is adapted to the pupils' individual needs and levels of knowledge. The school also offers bilingual classes (Swedish and English) from pre-school up to grade 6, which will be extended to grade 9. The school offers after-school care for children up to the age of nine until 17:30 and a free-time activity club for older children. The school also co-operates with an English day-care centre for children between the ages of two to five years, a secondary school from grade 6 and upwards for language studies (third/fourth language elective: Spanish, French and German). Senior High School education with English programmes is available at three different schools in Uppsala. The goal of the education programme is that each child should develop his/her talents according to his/her potential in order to have a full and useful life as an adult citizen in a democratic society. All tuition follows the Swedish national curriculum and teachers, pupils and parents focus on the following goals: 1. knowledge, 2. self-confidence, 3. social competence. The pupils attending the international classes have a varied educational background with regard to the type and length of schooling. Each pupil is treated individually according to his/her ability when entering the classes. Extra English tuition is given when necessary. Due to the international nature of the school, with children from 60 different countries, the school's policy is to promote international awareness as much as possible by focusing on the children's cultures and traditions for theme work and highlighting important festivals and events from various countries. |
