Sigtunaskolan Humanistiska Laroverket
Sigtunaskolan Humanistiska Läroverket (SSHL) is a co-educational boarding school founded in 1924 situated in the old town of Sigtuna some 45 kms outside Stockholm. The school, placed high on a hill overlooking Lake Malaren, seeks to provide young people with the insight and knowledge needed to enable them to become strong and self-confident individuals. More than 360 students are boarders with different backgrounds. Many of them are Swedish nationals whose parents are working abroad. They live and learn together on the attractive campus. In addition there are around 220 day students from the Sigtuna area. The mixture of international and national students and teachers contributes to a uniquely stimulating, multi-cultural learning centre. The school has excellent facilities for sports, music, drama and art to ensure a wide range of leisure and extracurricular activities. The school has a private status managed by a Board of Governors, is subsidized by the Swedish Ministry and under its inspection. The school strives to introduce more and more bilingual teaching, English/Swedish, in order to bridge the national and the international educational programmes. The Middle Years Programme introduced in 1998 is now offered in grades 7-10. It is taught in English and/or Swedish. In grades 11-12, the following university preparatory programmes are offered: the Natural Sciences Programme of the Swedish national curriculum with most courses taught in Swedish; the Social Sciences Programme of the Swedish national curriculum, taught in English and/or Swedish; the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, taught in English. The school year runs from mid August to mid June. It has forty weeks of instruction and is divided into two periods. Admission is based upon evaluation of previous school records, references and entrance or placement tests if necessary. A personal interview is desirable. High academic standards are required. |
